Unfortunately, her new school takes up Sensha-do soon after her arrival. Miho Nishizumi, the protagonist of this story, was a very capable captain of Sensha-do in her previous school, but due to a traumatic experience in the semi-finals of the previous Sensha-do tournament, she distanced herself from the sport by transferring to a school that doesn’t participate in the Sensha-do, Ōarai Academy. Schools from around the world compete in a sport called Sensha-do, or “way of the tank.” In this universe, "tankery," as it is colloquially known, is seen as a dignified martial art that helps girls hone their grace and femininity. Girls und Panzer’s story is a simple one. Manages to not only be worthwhile, but also one of the most consistently entertaining shows in recent memory. It is against all odds, then, that Girls und Panzer

With this in mind, it’s only natural to approach the simple premise of “cute girls driving tanks” with caution. In recent times, we’ve had a spate of these lusterless shows - whether it be “cute girls climbing mountains!” or “cute girls that are actually anthropomorphic guns or something!” - and the results are nigh-invariably uninspired dreck that’s not worthy of anyone’s time. There’s a reasonably well-justified tendency among anime fans to hastily dismiss the potential merit of any permutation of the whole “cute girls doing cute things” motif that’s so nauseatingly ubiquitous in modern anime. Now, with the aid of some new friends, she must overcome her past and once again take command of a squadron of tanks in an effort to save her school from closure, all while proving to her family that the Nishizumi-style of senshadou is not solely about victory. However, with the news of the upcoming championships, the school revives their tankery program, and Miho is pushed into joining. To steer clear of the practice as much as possible, she transfers to Ooarai Girls High School where the senshadou program has been abolished. Miho Nishizumi, who comes from a lineage of well-respected senshadou specialists, is at odds with the sport after a traumatic event led to her retirement and eventually a rift to form between her and her family. Becoming a worldwide phenomenon over time, the influence of senshadou leads to the creation of a world championship which will soon be held in Japan. Widely practiced by women and girls alike, it's advertised as a form of art geared towards making ladies more prominent in culture and appealing to men. Gloriana has yet to face Ōarai in an official tournament match, so for them it's "the only one that will beat you in an official match."Senshadou" is a traditional sport using World War II era tanks in elimination-based matches. Gloriana seems to be an exception as the only team to have beaten Ōarai (in a training match). The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Each team defeated by Ōarai expressed that they will be the one who would win next time.

Saunders is also rich enough to have enough tanks for three full sensha-do teams. Gloriana's school ship, for instance, is about three times bigger than Ōarai's.

  • Privileged Rival: With the sole exceptions of Anzio Academy and Continuation High note Like Ōarai, is composed of tanks coming from different countries, but gathered through illicit means, all of Ōarai's rival teams have access to better tanks and are obviously better funded by their respective schools.
  • Continuation high seems to be the exception to this as the named characters have yet to exhibit Finnish stereotypes beyond being improbably badass. Quixiotically Chi-Ha-Tan is Japanese, specifically the best parts of the Japanese warrior ethos from Taisho era Japan. Gloriana is Britain, Saunders is America, Pravda is Russia, Anzio is Italy, and Kuromorimine is Germany.
  • National Stereotypes: Invoked with each school, even though they are all ethnically Japanese.
  • They are also able to bring their tanks with them because there is no rule about transfer students bringing "private property" with them in a sensha-do match.
  • Loophole Abuse: They are able to aid Ōarai as additional units due to a "temporary transfer".
  • Averted with Klara, who is actually Russian.
  • Fauxreigner: Subverted even though almost all the other schools' students are only known by their foreign nicknames/ Nom de Guerre and adopt the looks (including Implausible Hair Color), culture, and stereotypes from their school's respective nations, they're all Japanese and identify as such.
  • Dream Team: In the movie, the best sensha do teams all unite under Ōarai's banner against the University Team.
